Simple Front Yard Landscaping Tips2010-11-04
The landscape designs created for front yards will most always have a different purpose than those for backyards. Front yards are most always the main entry for the home so front yard landscapes are usually designed for entry, access, and curb appeal. Also, being the first thing that folks see when they visit or pass by your house, the front yard landscape usually gives them a first impression of your home as well as your landscaping. Front yards are where everyone enters and leaves the home, though most people don't usually spend a lot of time there. Basically, a front yard landscape design can get a good start by designing the necessary walkways or driveways and then the rest of the design can often be created around that.

Plants and planting ideas for the front yard usually focus on several different aspects of your home like placement, shape, and position on the lot. It is important that all the elements including fences, walkways, driveways, and plants around the house complement it. Shrubs, trees, and some other larger plant groups can often unify the house and the landscaping by making the home seem more like a natural part of the landscaping.

Special consideration should be given to your landscaping design in the areas of the door and the corners of the house. The door is actually a focal point of the house and it's often a good idea to place shorter plants on either side of it. However, for the corners, the taller plants are excellent since they can lead the viewer's eye toward the front door focal point.

Trees can also serve to frame the view of the home which is another good reason to use them in front yard landscaping ideas. They can place interest on the house making it the main feature of the property. A good rule to follow when selecting trees is to choose trees with a mature size that is within the same scale of the home. Take special care to not plant any trees with a mature height that is hugely taller than the house as they will end up dwarfing and possibly overpowering the house. On the other side of the coin, planting shorter trees can make the house appear taller and possibly out of proportion as well.

Consider the different tree shapes and then select the ones with a shape that will accent the style of the home. Steep angle roofed homes will most always look best with trees like Spruce and Birch which are pyramid shape. For the low lines of ranch style homes, maples and dogwoods trees which are horizontal or round, are great choices.

Aside from the other plants and trees, an open lawn area is also important in most landscape design styles as it can create a good setting for the house. A front yard with a patch of lawn surrounded by clean flower beds, shrubs, and ornamental plants can add the illusion of a bigger space than there is. When planting shrubs, keep in mind that they may seem to be out of place if not planted in designated planting and flower beds.

The creation of beautiful front yard landscaping ideas begin with the design. Whether your plan is to do the entire landscaping project all at once or in steps, a finished design is necessary to keep the project on track. Without it, you'll end up with a patch work landscape that was obviously pieced together.Take the time to consider all we've learned in this article and create a finished plan first.

For the most part, landscaping the front yard can be about designing an inviting entryway while also framing and accenting the view of the home. And creating the perfect front yard landscape can literally be as easy as placing the walks, driveways, and entryways and then designing the landscaping and planting schemes around them.
